Shoulder and arm pain: what to check before a massage

Home › Blog and massage guides

Pain in the shoulder or arm can involve muscles, joints, tendons or nerves. Radiating pain cannot be diagnosed from an online description.

In brief

Seek medical advice for weakness, numbness, swelling, injury or strong pain. Consider wellness only when it is suitable.

Different causes need different answers

Pain when raising the arm may have a different cause from pain radiating from the neck. IQWiG explains shoulder pain and assessment. A firm massage on a guess is no substitute for a diagnosis.

When to get help

Seek medical advice after an accident or for swelling, redness, warmth, numbness, marked weakness or severe pain. Sudden arm pain with chest pressure or breathlessness needs immediate medical help.

Move without overloading

Avoid movements that sharply worsen acute pain, but do not immobilise the arm indefinitely without advice. A clinician or physiotherapist can recommend suitable exercises if symptoms persist.

Wellness only after suitability is clear

If there are no contraindications, a head, neck and shoulder massage may be a comfortable break. It does not treat a tendon injury or nerve condition.

Common questions

Is arm pain always muscle tension?

No. Joints, tendons, nerves and other causes are possible.

When should I see a doctor?

After an injury or with swelling, numbness, weakness, severe pain or reduced movement.

Is firm massage a good idea?

Not automatically. Unexplained or acute symptoms should be assessed first.

Can I book with a sensitive shoulder?

Discuss the symptoms with the studio and seek medical advice first if suitability is unclear.
