Headaches: understand your symptoms and take sensible breaks

Home › Blog and massage guides

Headaches do not all have the same cause. Tension-type headache, migraine and other conditions call for different responses. Massage is not a general headache treatment.

In brief

Observe patterns and seek medical help for sudden, severe or unusual symptoms. Consider wellness only when it is appropriate for you.

Different headaches need different care

Location, duration, frequency and associated symptoms help with assessment. IQWiG provides an overview. Discuss recurring headaches with a clinician, especially if they disrupt daily life.

Know the warning signs

A sudden extremely severe headache, new neurological symptoms, confusion, fever with a stiff neck or headache after an injury needs prompt medical attention. Call 112 in Germany for an acute emergency.

Track patterns rather than guess

Regular sleep, meals, fluids and breaks may help you recognise personal patterns. A headache diary can support a medical appointment. Frequent painkiller use may itself make headaches more common.

When a wellness visit might fit

If medical concerns are settled and touch feels pleasant, you can consider a head, neck and shoulder massage. Tell the studio if head contact is uncomfortable or you have a migraine attack. No relief or prevention is promised.

Common questions

Does massage treat migraine?

No. Discuss diagnosis and treatment with a medical professional.

Which headache is an emergency?

A sudden extremely severe headache or one with neurological symptoms, confusion or fever and a stiff neck needs immediate assessment.

Can neck tension cause headaches?

Neck discomfort and headaches can occur together, but that does not establish the cause.

Can I book with a headache?

For new, severe or unexplained headaches, seek medical advice first.

This guide helps you plan a wellness visit and does not replace medical advice.
